“Agentic Checkout” will significantly change our purchasing behavior in the future.

With "AI Mode," and especially with the new Agentic Checkout, Google is introducing a radically simpler and almost automated way to shop online. While currently focused on fashion and consumer goods, the ideas are readily applicable to the tourism sector.

AI Mode: Personalized advice tailored to your needs

  • AI Mode combines the smart features of Gemini (Google's AI) with the Shopping Graph: a huge database of more than 50 billion products, of which 2 billion items are updated every hour.
  • A visual panel and smart search techniques ("Query Fan-Out") provide contextual suggestions. For example, waterproof travel bags for rainy destinations. These suggestions adapt to the user's preferences.

➤ Opportunity for tourism: Someone searching for “beach hotel with spa in Greece” automatically receives information about the season, weather, and reviews in addition to photos.

Agentic Checkout: Automatically book at your ideal price

  • Users indicate their preferences (e.g. size, color, budget) and activate “Track Price”.
  • Once the price falls below your set budget, all you have to do is click “Buy for me”.
  • Google places the product in the seller's shopping cart and completes the purchase through Google Pay.

➤ Opportunity for tourism: Flight tickets, hotel stays, or rental cars can be booked automatically based on price alerts. You then only need to save the budget, travel dates, and passenger details once.

Examples of where an Agentic Checkout can be used

  • A day at the amusement park: When you only want to book for a specific price that fits your budget.

The agent monitors whether bundled or discounted tickets become available, confirms the conditions (date, quantity, type) and starts the checkout once the conditions are met.

  • A camping holiday: A family wants a waterfront camping spot with electricity, for less than a certain amount per night, in the first week of August.

Agentic Checkout monitors the campsite's availability and prices and automatically books you when a spot that meets your criteria becomes available.

  • A last minute booking: A couple is open to “any accommodation in the holiday park” for the coming weekend, as long as the price remains below a certain amount.

The agent monitors cancellations and unsold availability. As soon as a last-minute deal appears, the agent reserves and completes the booking.

Virtual fitting as inspiration

  • With “Try it on” you can digitally try on clothes on your own photo.
  • A smart AI takes body shape and the type of material into account.

➤ Opportunity for tourism: Virtual room tours where you can see your own luggage, or realistic depictions of hotels and cruise ships become possible.

Potential benefits for the travel industry

  • Time savings: Automatic booking based on price alerts prevents missed opportunities, such as cheap airline tickets. This time saving also benefits the customer, who then has a more pleasant booking experience.
  • More personalization: Offers are tailored to each individual based on budget, travel style, and hotel preferences.
  • More bookings: Thanks to the simple and fast checkout process, fewer purchases are abandoned, especially for expensive trips. In addition, more last-minute bookings can fill the available space, as automatic bookings or notifications bring more customers (and alerts) to special offers.

Challenges and the future

  • Privacy and trust: Automated bookings require a lot of trust in the Google account, payment details and passport information.
  • Technical connections: Travel providers must open their systems to an automatic booking system, similar to the Shopping Graph.
  • Legislation: Consumer rights and cancellation rules must be clear.

Within a few months, Agentic Checkout will launch in the US for in-store products. It's only a matter of time before travel platforms follow suit, and we'll soon be able to book our dream trip completely automatically through an AI agent.
