Glamping or holidays with nature experience?

The term 'glamping' has been causing discussion for years. What does it actually include? It was also one of the topics of discussion during Pleisureworld's 2-day glamping trip. In addition to the precondition of 'luxury and comfort', this study trip showed that 'nature experience' is perhaps an even more important element of a successful glamping concept.

Because the term 'glamping' is not clearly defined or protected, various accommodations and camping advertise themselves with this term. We also discovered this during the 2-day glamping where eight locations were visited. Although the 'camping' component of glamping was not always present, the nature component proved to be the connecting factor. Kristel Schelfhout, owner of Het Warredal (wooden accommodations) put it nicely: “We do not label ourselves as 'glamping', but we certainly want to be found on the platforms when people select 'glamping'. The glamping feeling, with comfort and nature experience, is something that we certainly offer.”

Some lessons from the inspiration journey:

  • For the managers of the green nature accommodations, sustainability and nature-friendly business operations are self-evident. They are, without exception, very aware of the added value that the beautiful natural environment offers them.
  • Thinking in concepts is of great added value when setting up a glamping offer; know who your target group is, and build the experience around that. Within glamping there are various sub-segments (e.g. aimed at seclusion, or 'coming together', for families or child-free.)
  • Small scale is an added value, but also poses challenges for exploitation and profitable business operations. You can ask a slightly higher price if you really offer your guests something special. And that added value is often linked to experiencing nature.
  • Something intangible, but very relevant, is the 'atmosphere and experience' at the company. The terms 'coziness and warmth' were sometimes used. Or “the concept must be correct in all details of the implementation”.
  • In the permanent accommodations, the large window in the living room often played a role in making the experience of nature visible within the accommodation.

This was a short first impression of the glamping inspiration trip. There will be a few more articles about the individual glamping locations in the near future.
