Expenditure by foreign visitors to the Netherlands is higher than before corona

In the third quarter of 2023, spending by foreign travelers in the Netherlands was 25 percent higher than in the summer months of 2019. Due to the coronavirus measures, these fell sharply in 2020 and 2021. Outbound travel is also on the rise, but has not quite reached pre-coronavirus levels yet. The current higher price level (inflation) also plays a role in this.

Statistics Netherlands reports this based on new figures on international trade in services.

All foreign travelers spent more than 2023 billion euros in the Netherlands in the third quarter of 6. Germans accounted for almost half of travel expenditure in the Netherlands in the third quarter. Travelers from Belgium and the United Kingdom complete the top 3. Spending from these three countries accounted for 60 percent of the export value of travel. Conversely, Germany is the country where Dutch travelers spent the most money in the summer months of 2023 (16 percent of traveler expenditure). France and Spain followed with 13 and 10 percent respectively. In total, the Dutch spent 7,6 billion euros abroad.

Expenditure on goods or services by foreign travelers during their stay in the Netherlands, incoming travel, is regarded as an export of services. In total international services trade, travel will be one of the five most important service types in 2023. Travel has an 8 percent share of Dutch service exports and accounts for 11 percent of Dutch service imports.

Germans take their wallets

Inbound travel was 1,3 billion euros higher in the summer months of 2023 than in the same months in 2019. German, Spanish and American travelers in particular contribute to this growth. Spending by German travelers during their stay in our country increased by 23 percent. For Spanish travelers this has more than doubled. Conversely, there has been a decrease of 101 million euros in outbound travel. Dutch people spent less in the United States, Germany and Greece in particular than in the third quarter of 2019. Spending by Dutch travelers in France and Italy did experience growth.

German travelers spent more than 2023 billion euros during their stay or visit to the Netherlands in the third quarter of 2,9. This is 15 percent more than in the same quarter of 2022. Partly due to higher prices, German spending has never been this high before. Conversely, Dutch holidaymakers, day trippers and business travelers in Germany spent 1,2 billion euros on goods and services.
