Campers are mainly looking for freedom and space

Many campervan owners have clear preferences regarding information provision and practical matters such as price, availability, and amenities. They also value privacy and are often looking for spontaneous overnight accommodations. In a large survey conducted by the Dutch Campervan Club (NKC) and Campercontact, over 9000 campervan owners shared their experiences, ideas, and frustrations. The results were shared with stakeholders in the campervan sector.

"Campers are flexible and adventurous, but sometimes encounter unnecessary obstacles," says Tom Leenstra of NKC. "With these insights, we can have a focused discussion about solutions that make traveling even more enjoyable."

Space, freedom, peace and hygiene

The survey shows that nearly 56 percent of respondents don't want to be too close to their neighbors. Nearly half of respondents also find it difficult to find a place to stay overnight on the fly, especially during peak periods. Campers also indicate that they value a well-maintained site, clear rules, and a bit of peace and quiet. Some striking figures:

• 63 % is bothered by poorly maintained facilities
• 56 % thinks it's a shame if chairs or an awning are not allowed to be placed outside
• 48 % mentions noise pollution as a disturbing factor

Although these figures are critical, they mainly indicate that campers have high expectations and are involved with the places where they stay.

Opportunity for improvement and collaboration

NKC will use the research results to discuss the quality of campervan sites with municipalities, site managers, and other parties. Topics to be covered include:

• More space for spontaneous overnight stays
• Clear and up-to-date information via Campercontact
• Clear and hospitable rules
• Investments in good basic facilities
