The rediscovery of 'simplicity' on vacation

Holidays seem to be becoming increasingly grand and luxurious, but many Dutch people actually long for the opposite. Almost half of the Dutch feel that holidays are becoming increasingly extravagant these days. At the same time, a similar proportion of the Dutch occasionally longs for a simple holiday where luxury is less important.

Moreover, it is striking that only a third of the Dutch prefer a more luxurious lifestyle on holiday than at home.

This is evident from research by Univé , conducted by PanelWizard among 1.067 Dutch people. This need for simplicity is not limited to a desire. Almost two-thirds of the Dutch indicate that they would rather choose a longer, simple holiday than a shorter, luxury trip.

Not just a matter of money

Although rising travel costs play a role in holiday choices, many Dutch people do not opt for a simpler holiday solely due to the cost. About half say they are quicker to choose a simpler holiday because of higher travel costs. At the same time, an almost equally large group indicates a conscious desire for a holiday where luxury is less important. Thus, a simple holiday is not only the result of a practical consideration, but also a conscious choice.

Experiences more important than luxury

For many holidaymakers, a trip is increasingly about what they experience. Almost half of the Dutch say they are more often looking for unique or special experiences during holidays. Furthermore, over a third find an adventurous holiday increasingly attractive than a relaxing one. Young adults, in particular, are leading the way in this regard. Almost three-quarters of the Dutch under 30 say they are increasingly looking for unique experiences during holidays. More than half of this group find an adventurous holiday increasingly attractive than a relaxing one.

A successful holiday doesn't have to be grand or luxurious.

According to Univé, travelers are increasingly opting for vacations where experiences are more important than luxury. Aafke Bos, Travel Insurance Specialist at cooperative Univé: “For many people, a successful vacation is not about luxury, but about having time for each other, gaining new experiences, and getting away from the daily hustle and bustle. This research shows that many Dutch people make this choice very consciously. Especially when you choose a different way of traveling, it is wise to consider in advance what you will need along the way. Appropriate travel insurance is just as much a part of that as good preparation.”
