This summer, Kunstenfestival Watou presents a brand-new concept: the Painting Hunt. After barely a month, the new activity has managed to surprise a growing audience with its unique combination of regional exploration, riddles, and art. During the summer period, the investment is recouped by attaching a prize to the activity. Afterwards, the activity remains 'up and running', but without prizes for the winners.
More and more enthusiastic art lovers are going out
Despite the Painting Hunt being a brand-new concept that still needs to gain traction, the number of participants is clearly increasing. While the first hunt got off to a relatively quiet start, participants can now expect considerably more competition for the grand prize. Participants come from all over Flanders.
It's also striking that more and more participants are succeeding in finding the hidden "tube" at the end of the search. Whoever finds it has a chance to win an original painting by a top artist. The searches are challenging, but the searchers are committed. Some return several times to look for the tube. And since you're not bound by opening hours, there's no time pressure: one participant found the tube at six in the morning, while others take a late-night stroll and reach it at ten at night.
Costs
There are 10 different Painting Hunts to choose from, including walking and cycling tours. Painting Hunts where a painting is still up for grabs cost €12, while tours where the painting has already been awarded cost €5. The plan is to continue offering these hunts after September 19th, albeit without the prize pool.
Kunstenfestival Watou collaborated with PiliPiliGames, a young company from Leuven, for the development of the scavenger hunts. The cost of developing 10 Painting Hunt games and accompanying videos amounted to 50,000 euros.
