Pet owners aged 55 and older take their animals on vacation more often than younger target groups. For holiday parks, campsites, and accommodations, this offers opportunities for a more targeted pet-friendly offering.
In-home babysitting remains most popular
Of the pet owners surveyed, 40% leave their animal at home with family or friends during a holiday of a week or longer. Taking the pet along ranks second at 23%.
Another 16% have the animal stay with family or friends. Less than 10% opt for a pet boarding facility or shelter. The figures are derived from survey research by comparison website Overstappen.nl. The size and composition of the sample are not mentioned in the press release.
Age partly determines the choice of holiday
Among pet owners aged 55 and older, 28% take their animal on vacation. In the 18 to 34 age group, this is 23%, and among 35 to 54-year-olds, it is 17%.
Younger holidaymakers, on the other hand, are more likely to opt for in-home care. Of those aged 18 to 34, 46% call upon family or friends to look after the animal at home. Among those aged 35 to 54, that proportion stands at 48%. For those over 55, it is 31%.
Opportunities for pet-friendly accommodation
For leisure businesses, age differences show that pet-friendly offerings are not equally relevant for every target group. Older guests, in particular, seem to have a greater need for accommodations where a dog or other pet is welcome.
This does not only involve permission to bring an animal. A fenced garden, sufficient space, walking opportunities, and clear information about house rules can also influence the choice of accommodation.
Holiday parks and campsites can also communicate in advance about possible surcharges, the maximum number of pets, and amenities in the surrounding area.
Preparation for trips abroad
According to Overstappen.nl, anyone taking a dog or cat abroad must take into account a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and a European pet passport. Some countries have additional requirements. According to insurance expert Nick Brendel, potential damage to a holiday home and veterinary costs during the trip also require preparation.
