Dutch municipalities expect to collect 2024 million euros in revenue from tourist taxes in 538. This is 110 million euros more than in 2023. The increase is mainly due to Amsterdam. The capital expects to collect 2024 million euros in tourist taxes in 242,5, an increase of 47 percent compared to a year earlier. Statistics Netherlands reports this based on research into the municipal budgets of 2024.
Hotel rates, cruise passenger rates, and the entertainment tax (VMR) for visitors on canal tours are all rising. In Amsterdam, the tourist tax has been increased from 10% to 12,5% of the overnight stay price effective January 1, 2024. According to a statement by the city council, the rate increase is being used to curb the growth in the number of tourists. However, it also works out perfectly for the Amsterdam budget.
The municipality of Rotterdam is in second place with the highest budgeted amount of tourist tax. Here the yield also increases, but less rapidly, by 23,2 percent to 16,8 million euros.
In other tourist areas, such as the Wadden Islands, the joint budgeted increase is almost 16 percent, lower than the national average. The Wadden Islands together expect to collect 20,9 million euros in tourist tax before 2024.
Municipalities expect to receive 13,3 billion euros this year from all their various levies. The property tax provides the largest source of income. This means that the municipalities budget 8,5 percent more than budgeted for 2023 and the largest increase since 2007.
