Holland Casino is in trouble if gambling tax increases further

Despite a decline in turnover compared to 2023, Holland Casino is satisfied with the result achieved in 2024. The number of visits to the 14 locations increased by 100.000 to 5,2 million. Holland Casino has a special revenue model in which a large part of the turnover is paid out again as prizes. Partly because of this, an increase in the gambling tax to 37,8% has a major impact on the financial result and the investments in the prevention of gambling addiction and money laundering.

Holland Casino Venlo (was voted Best Casino in Europe in Venice)

Holland Casino closed 2024 with a turnover of €784 million, a decrease of €33,7 million (-4,1 percent) compared to 2023 (€817,7 million). The result before corporate tax was €-1,3 million (€31,9 million in 2023). This means that Holland Casino closed a financially challenging year better than expected. This is evident from the recently published annual report for 2024.

Problems foreseen with increase in gambling tax

In total, Holland Casino paid €2024 million in gambling tax in 222,6. Holland Casino calls on the government to cancel a further proposed increase as of 1 January 2026. The second increase in gambling tax to 37,8% in 2026 and State Secretary Struycken's vision of an even safer and more responsible gambling policy do not go together. With a total tax burden of well over 50% of turnover, this cannot be achieved.

CEO Petra de Ruiter: “Looking ahead to 2025, we see that in the first quarter, with the measures taken, turnover remains more or less the same. With the – sometimes painful – cost-saving measures taken, we believe that the stretch has largely run out.”
