New Family Edutainment Centre over the North Sea is being built in Scheveningen

Sandenburg DST is developing a new attraction in Scheveningen: The North Sea Experience (working title). The new experience is aimed at families and offers a mix of large rides, interactive exhibitions, playgrounds, workshops, and shows.

It combines the appeal of a family entertainment centre with engaging educational stories about the North Sea.

Guests embark on an unforgettable adventure where they discover how the sea influences our lives on land and delve into the world of fishing, storms, ships, oil rigs, wind turbines, and the mysterious underwater world. The experience consists of three moving attractions: Underwater, On the Water, and Above the Water. Exhibitions and live shows will also explore topics such as marine life, fishing, offshore energy, the blue economy, port activities, and the history of Scheveningen.

description of the total concept

Victor Schade, Creative Director at Sandenburg-DST, explains: “This new concept is a hybrid form of leisure that caters to a growing need among families: leisure activities that are fun, high-quality, and meaningful. Parents want to teach their children something, and children primarily want to have fun. You could compare it to National Geographic Ultimate Explorer .”

Sandenburg-DST expects the new destination, tentatively titled North Sea Experience, to attract at least 120.000 visitors annually. Dutch families in the Scheveningen catchment area are the primary target group, with tourists as additional visitors.

North Sea Experience will be located at the southern tip of Scheveningen's beach and boulevard, and on the north side of Scheveningen Harbor. It will be housed in a new, mixed-use development adjacent to a modern 800-space parking garage. The attraction will occupy 1.600 square meters of the new complex, which will also house a conference center, restaurants, short-stay apartments, and offices.

The project is an initiative of local entrepreneurs in Scheveningen and aligns with the tourism vision of the municipality of The Hague. Both parties see the opportunity to add an educational attraction to the region's existing tourist offerings. The initiators are now seeking recreational entrepreneurs and businesses interested in collaborating on the new location and exploring the potential of North Sea Experience.

For specific elements of the experience, an investment subsidy of €1,25 million is available from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature. Interested parties in the leisure and attractions sector can request the plan documents and business case forecasts.
