Research into the future of small campsites; Campers are both an opportunity and an irritation

The Big Small Camping Survey by Kampeermeneer shows that campers are causing division among campers and managers of small campsites: Campers extend the season, but also put pressure on the atmosphere.

Atmosphere under pressure due to growth of campers

The research shows that 83% of campers choose a small campsite for the "natural environment" and 72% for the "peace and quiet." These are by far the top two reasons, even among campers. But it's precisely this atmosphere and tranquility that are under threat due to the rise of campers.

28% of campers consider the growth of campers and caravans a threat to the atmosphere and small-scale atmosphere. After the rise of glamping and rising prices, it's the biggest concern. Frequently mentioned responses include:

  • “Sometimes you look at a white wall of campers.”
  • “The noise of those sliding doors is bloody annoying.”
  • “Everyone is only there for a short time, so there is less contact.”

Camper doors are a major annoyance

Even among the biggest camping annoyances, campers are a recurring theme. While dirty sanitary facilities (86,2%) top the list, noise pollution from fellow campers (65,3%) comes in second.

The sound of camper doors stands out: the rolling sliding sound followed by a slam is widely cited by campers as a source of irritation, including by camper owners themselves.

Campers ask for better camper spots

However, the advice that respondents give to small campsites also includes the following that is surprisingly common: “Provide good camper pitches and camper facilities such as level (paved) pitches, water supply and waste water drainage.”

Balancing for small campsites

The rise of the campervan creates opportunities for small campsites. Campers enjoy a longer season and camp more often throughout the year, even outside peak season, than other campers.

Demand for campervan sites is expected to continue to grow in 2026. For campsite owners, the challenge is to find the balance between pleasing campers and preserving the natural atmosphere and tranquility that their guests come for.

Call for camper of the year 2027

Camper manufacturers could also help their customers and small campsites get started. For example, by equipping campers with soft-close door mechanisms as standard. Furthermore, a more adventurous color scheme for the exterior of campers could enhance the ambiance, according to Tjerk Romkema of Kampeermeneer.
