Open Monument Day Flanders is back on pre-corona course with 400.000 visitors

More than 400.000 people turned out during Open Monument Day on September 9, 2023. With this, Flanders' largest cultural event is back at pre-corona levels, despite the tropical temperatures.

Interest in cultural history also appeared to be historically high in the Netherlands. Open Monument Day in the Netherlands reached a new visitor record of 1,3 million visitors.

The local organizers made an extra effort for the 35th edition and more than lived up to the theme “with heart and soul”. They organized 1025 activities throughout Flanders, which was the last year since the previous festival edition in 2013. There was something to do in 800 places, a third more than last year.

Good weather was predicted, it was a very warm day. But the heritage lovers were there for the appointment. Most tours were full and many people specifically chose a specific location or activity. Cool places, such as bunkers, forts and cellars, had an advantage today. The central cities all recorded an increase in visitors compared to last year and there was a striking amount of attention for the offer of modernist heritage. There was a pleasant hustle and bustle everywhere all day.

The Open Monument Day in Flanders is organized by Herita.
