The Province of Overijssel is investing over €1 million in the further development of two National Parks

The Provincial Council of Overijssel has approved the allocation of €1.029.000 for the further development of two National Parks: the Sallandse Heuvelrug and Weerribben-Wieden. This contribution will allow the parks to continue investing in nature experiences, research, sustainable recreation, regional products, and education in the coming years.

Provincial Executive Member Erwin Hoogland emphasizes the importance of this investment: "The National Parks are of great value to Overijssel. They offer residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy our unique natural environment. Think of the beautiful purple carpets on the Sallandse Heuvelrug and the watery landscape of the Weerribben-Wieden at this time of year."

The Provincial Council decided to award the grant for the period 2025-2027. In the coming years, both parks will therefore be able to count on an annual contribution of €171.500. There was also widespread support for extending the funding until 2030, and a motion to that effect was passed. The Provincial Executive will present a proposal in 2026.

The provincial contribution comes at a crucial time for the National Parks. Proposed budget cuts from the national government threatened to create uncertainty about the future of the parks. This decision was ultimately reversed. With additional support from the province, the park organizations can continue their plans and maintain the facilities in the area.
