Collaboration between government and entrepreneurs ensures free and sustainable tourist transport

Since last week, the Kustbus has been driving along the North Holland coast again. New this year is that the bus runs on hydrogen and is therefore completely emission-free. A collaboration between the Province of North Holland, the municipalities of Den Helder and Schagen, the Ondernemers Federatie Schagen (OFS) and the Ondernemersvereniging Den Helder (OVDH) ensures that the bus can be used free of charge by tourists.

The bus will run for a month longer than before this year: from June 19 to August 31. This means that early arrivals of local residents, tourists and beachgoers can already use this service in June.

The Kustbus has 35 seats and 45 standing places and travels between Petten and Den Helder four times a day. It stops at various coastal towns along the way. From the bus stops in these towns, tourists can walk to the beach via a short route. There are no parking facilities at the stops.

Kees de Wit (OFS) and Mary Romar (OVDH tourism and recreation department): “We are proud that the Kustbus is not only zero emission, but also invites everyone to a wonderful and carefree day out. Not just for tourists, but also for local residents. Whether you want to go to the beach, spend an afternoon at the Goudvis, go on an adventure in the Land van Fluwel or visit the Marine Museum or a fort with older children: the Kustbus will take you there. Even childcare or nursery classes that want to organize a fun outing at the end of the school year can use it. And also elderly people who want to go out for a day under the supervision of organizations such as the Zonnebloem can go along comfortably and free of charge.”

Coastal bus projects are also active in Bergen aan Zee, Egmond aan Zee and Castricum.
