More and more Dutch travelers are choosing a hostel or budget hotel

The number of Dutch travelers choosing hostels or budget hotels has almost doubled in the past two years, from 10,6 percent in 2023 to 19,8 percent today, according to research by Travellyze. While hostels were once seen solely as a stopover for young adventurers, they are now part of a broader trend toward sustainable and social travel.

As Europe's largest hostel chain, a&o Hostels sees this shift in guest behavior and choices every day. Today's travelers seek flexibility, social connection, and practical comfort, and find exactly that in a modern hostel environment.

The new backpacker mentality

"The essence of travel has always remained the same: curiosity, flexibility, and discovering new destinations," says Oliver Winter, CEO and founder of a&o Hostels. "But the way people travel has changed. Today's travelers are more aware, technology-driven, and demanding. They want affordable quality, sustainability, and flexibility, without compromising the experience."

The modern backpacker is no longer a stereotypical student. It's a broad demographic that chooses efficient travel and meaningful connections. From digital nomads to young families and solo travelers, they all seek something similar: freedom, connection, and smart budgeting.
