In 2024, Dutch and foreign tourists spent €111,2 billion in the Netherlands. That's almost €6 billion more than in 2023. Foreign tourists account for more than half of this increase, although they only spent €38,2 billion in 2024. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on research for the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Adjusted for price changes, foreign tourist spending is over 5 percent higher than in 2023, the first full year without coronavirus restrictions. Foreign tourists account for approximately one-third of total tourism expenditure in the Dutch economy, and Dutch tourists spent €67,3 billion (60% of the total) in 2024.
Tourist expenditure refers to the total amount spent by tourists before, during, and after their trip, as well as during their stay. This also includes expenditure by foreign tourists who do not travel to the Netherlands, for example, if tourists book online with a Dutch company.
Tourism to grow faster than total economy in 2024
The tourism sector added 2024 percent more value to the Dutch economy in 1,7 than the previous year (adjusted for price changes). Total added value amounts to €40 billion. This has almost reached the 2019 level, before the coronavirus pandemic.
The added value of the tourism sector grew faster than the total economy in 2024. Since the end of the coronavirus pandemic, the added value of tourism has been growing faster than the entire Dutch economy. This was also the case in the years before the pandemic.
