Utrecht municipalities and province to realize 130 cycling projects

On October 9, 2025, the Province of Utrecht and all 26 municipalities within the province signed a letter of intent to improve regional cycling routes. In total, the 26 municipalities have over 130 cycling projects planned for the period up to and including 2029. These projects range from the construction of cycle streets to addressing unsafe traffic situations. The Province of Utrecht intends to provide financial support to the municipalities in these projects.

“With the regional cycling network, we want to jointly offer our residents safe, comfortable, and smooth cycling connections between home, school, work, public transport hubs, and other important destinations,” say the aldermen from the participating municipalities.

The signing took place during the meeting of the Utrecht Traffic and Transport Council (UVVB). With this signing, the municipalities and the province of Utrecht commit to continue working together to improve regional cycling connections throughout the province. The agreement outlines, among other things, the projects the municipalities intend to pursue through 2029. It also indicates where the province can provide support through subsidies. For example, cycle paths will be widened, cycle streets constructed, crossings at intersections improved, and separate cycle paths constructed. Progress on the projects is discussed annually in the administrative consultations of the various regions.

Bicycle with a dot on number one

The province of Utrecht is a popular place to live, work, meet, and relax. The number of residents and visitors to our region will grow significantly in the coming decades. To accommodate this growth and utilize cycling as a solution, joint investments are needed in the regional cycling network.

Provincial Executive André van Schie: "To keep our region healthy, livable, and accessible, it's important to promote cycling. The province of Utrecht can't do this alone; we need the municipalities. This signing is an important step. In addition to these cycling projects, we're also investing in new continuous cycling routes, such as the Amersfoort-Utrecht continuous cycling route, which opened in June."
